Research Profile
Title of the Ph.D. Thesis

STUDY ON TWO-LINE RESOLUTION BY APODISED OPTICAL SYSTEMS IN COHERENT LIGHT (Between: 1987–1992 Through National CSIR Jr. & Sr. Research Fellowship)
Synopsis
This thesis advances a unified theoretical framework to address one of the most fundamental yet underexplored challenges in optical science; the precise resolution of two closely spaced line objects under coherent illumination. Moving beyond fragmented analytical approaches, the study introduces a powerful abstraction by treating the opaque straight edge as a universal mathematical building block, enabling the synthesis of diverse imaging scenarios through Fourier analytical methods.
By rigorously deriving intensity distributions for edge, line, and two-line objects, the research establishes a coherent bridge between physical optics and applied imaging systems. A key contribution lies in evaluating resolution limits under multiple apodisation schemes; Straubel, triangular, cosine-squared, and monotonic pupils; across classical criteria such as Rayleigh, Sparrow, and Conrady. The work further innovates by incorporating unequal intensity conditions, offering a more realistic and application-ready model for optical systems.
This thesis is not merely analytical; it is strategic. It reframes optical resolution as a controllable design parameter, opening pathways for enhanced imaging in microscopy, astronomy, and advanced photonic systems. By aligning mathematical elegance with experimental relevance, the study delivers a scalable foundation for next-generation optical engineering and precision imaging technologies.
